When temperatures rise, our feet need some extra care, too. For those who wear orthotic insoles, summer can be uncomfortable if certain precautions aren’t taken. Open-toed shoes, sweating, friction… Here are a few simple tips to help you keep wearing your insoles comfortably, even in the heat.
Choose closed-toe but breathable shoes, such as canvas sneakers or orthopedic sandals with removable insoles, or even styles with adjustable straps that can accommodate foot swelling caused by heat.
If it’s very hot, a thin cotton or technical-fiber sock can help reduce sweating, prevent chafing, and improve traction between your foot and the sole.
Use an absorbent powder (such as talcum powder) or a foot-specific antiperspirant spray available at pharmacies.
Take your insoles out every night to let them air out and dry. This prevents odors and extends their lifespan.
Gently clean them with a damp cloth without submerging them.
Check them regularly for signs of wear or deformation, especially in hot weather, which could cause them to warp or deteriorate.
If you’re traveling abroad, be sure to pack a spare pair of insoles just in case. This is important because you’re used to your insoles, and switching to a different pair requires a period of adjustment that could put a damper on your trip.
