Metatarsalgia: Understanding and Relieving Forefoot Pain

Metatarsalgia: Understanding and Relieving Forefoot Pain

Metatarsalgia refers to pain localized to the front of the foot, in the area of the bones known as the metatarsals. These long bones connect the midfoot to the toes and bear a large portion of the body’s weight when walking.

What causes metatarsalgia?

Metatarsalgia can have many causes, which are often benign:

Mechanical and functional factors

  • Overuse or excessive pressure: Wearing unsuitable shoes (with narrow toes or high heels) can increase pressure on the forefoot.
  • Compressed nerve: Morton's neuroma (a thickening of the nerve tissue between the toes) can cause sharp pain.
  • Sports injuries: Repeated impact (such as from running or tennis) can lead to metatarsal pain.
  • Overuse syndrome: excessive strain on the muscles and tendons of the foot, particularly during intense physical activity.

Medical causes

  • Foot deformities: hallux valgus (bunions) or hammertoes alter weight distribution and increase pressure on the front of the foot.
  • Arthritis: Inflammation of the metatarsal joints can also cause pain.

Orthopedic insoles: an effective solution

Orthotic insoles are a recognized treatment for relieving metatarsalgia. Specifically designed to reduce pressure on the forefoot, these insoles help:

  • optimal arch support: thereby limiting excessive pronation and stabilizing the foot.
  • enhanced cushioning: reducing the impact on the metatarsals with every step.
  • shock absorption: made from specialized materials, they protect the foot while walking or playing sports.
  • a metatarsal pad: built into the forefoot, it helps distribute pressure evenly and thus effectively relieves pain.

In addition, wearing appropriate footwear, doing stretching exercises, or applying ice may be recommended to improve management.

Where can I find the right insoles?

Pharmacists with a degree in orthopedics are authorized to provide custom-made insoles.

Some pharmacists are equipped with the Vistapod plate, an innovative medical device that, in just a few minutes:

  • captures static and dynamic foot prints,
  • analysis of pressure points that need to be corrected,
  • models the insoles to be manufactured.

The insoles, manufactured in a workshop in France, are delivered to your pharmacy along with a podiatry assessment within 72 hours.
